HMS Puriri Memorial
On Saturday May 14th 2011 over 130 people gathered at Ocean Beach for the unveiling service of a long overdue memorial to this loss. It was the only loss of life due to enemy action in NZ waters in WW2. With HMNZS Wellington sailing in the background off the beach, the Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral Tony Parr and other dignitaries addressed the crowd telling the story of the loss prior to unveiling the striking monument that stands above the beach. The only survivor of HMS Puriri still alive, 91 year old Dudley Mc Nab, had traveled from Nelson for the occasion.
